I was recently affected by the Energy Saver bug found in Workgroup Manager, where by this particular MCX manifest stops preferences applying on a users first login to a machine. For example, in my case a user would log in to a machine and only the Dock would apply – almost nothing else! If they then logged out and then back in again, everything would apply as expected! I recently wrote an article on how to create a script to empty the Trash when an Active Directory user logged out of a client computer. This required us to mess around with the trust relationship a little between the client computer and the server. Now with the use of the ‘ManagedClient.app’ and ‘Folder Redirections’ we don’t have to worry about that anymore!

In this article we’ll take a look in to using WGM to deliver a log-out script to managed clients which will empty the users trash. In many cases this may seem a little excessive – but since our network is primarily used by students with accounts hosted on Windows servers, we can gain back some of that lost server storage space by running this script.
