Many will remember that at the beginning of the month we took a look at a few of the missing featuresin the OS X Lion Server Golden Master release, which mooted some cause for concern. Now that we now have the final version released via the App Store and Server Admin Tools 10.7 available, we can take a look at what’s happening.
First things first. The Server.app is cool – if you are a complete server newbie and want a baby interface. Get Server Admin Tools on pronto so you can also use Server Admin.

So according to Apple documentation, this addresses our previous concerns:
- PostgreSQL: MySQL is replaced with PostgreSQL.
- Print service: Print service is replaced with CUPS.
PostgreSQL is not available as a service in either Server App or Server Admin. Lion documentation though, states the following:
Wiki and Device Manager services require a PostgreSQL server, so it starts when either of these services are turned on.
So what of NFS and FTP? Well, according to this Apple page NFS services are still in there and supported – I just haven’t found the GUI configurations for them yet!
But no mention of FTP… Oh, also worth mentioning that the inspector tab has been removed from WGM.
My guess is that we are going to have to find different tools to manage these missing features if we want to continue to use them, or (dread the thought) use command line tools!
To add a positive spin on this, there are some cool features in Server App. By far the most impressive is Profile Manager – I think with this, in time, we will see the death of WGM. Profile Manager allows you to configure preferences and settings for users with both Mac OS and iOS devices! I hope to test the functionality of this soon and write up a little review of the process.
